Winners Announced for The British Poker Awards

5 March 2014, London, UK (Press Release) – PokerStars Team Online’s Alex Millar was the big winner at the 2013 British Poker Awards, taking home two awards including the prestigious Player of the Year trophy.

Millar, who is known as ‘Kanu7’ online, added the Best Online Cash Player award after a phenomenal 2013 where he won more than $2m in cash games.

“Thanks for the messages everyone and thanks to everyone who voted for me as well as to Bluff Europe for hosting and picking me as Player of the Year,” Millar tweeted after the event.

All the biggest names on the UK poker scene attended the ceremony, which took place on Monday night at the famous Hippodrome Casino in London’s West End. The ceremony was organised by Bluff Europe and sponsored by PokerStars.com, while live music was provided by The Dukes of Mayfair.

Those in attendance included Sam Trickett, and PokerStars Team Pro members Liv Boeree and Victoria Coren. Trickett won two awards himself – Best Live Tournament Player and Best Live Cash Player – while Barny Boatman won the Lifetime Achievement Award as well as taking home Performance of the Year for his World Series of Poker bracelet win in Las Vegas.

Trickett was humbled by his Live Tournament Player of the Year award, heaping praise on fellow nominee Matt Ashton and saying “It shows what an amazing following I have built up over the last few years – thank you everybody for your support.”

Another of this year’s winners, Online Tournament Player of the Year Chris ‘Moorman1’ Moorman, sent in an acceptance speech from Los Angeles, where he is chasing his first World Poker Tour final table.

“Thanks to everyone who voted – the award means so much to me and I’m really proud to represent Britain across the globe,” Moorman said.

Run It Once was the first ever winner of the Best Poker Training Site award, with one of its sponsored pros, Sam Grafton, named Poker Personality of the Year. Other winners on the night included Coren, named Best Social Media User, and her fellow PokerStars Team Pro and International Player of the Year Daniel Negreanu.

Those behind the scenes were also recognised for their contribution, with Toby Stone named Tournament Director of the Year and Tony Kendall rewarded for his contribution to growing and promoting poker.

The EPT London took the honours as the Best UK Tournament while Dusk Till Dawn was voted the UK’s best card room.

After the ceremony, pros including Boeree, Boatman, PokerStars Team Online member Mickey Petersen, and Full Tilt Poker ambassador Sin Melin took part in a bounty tournament, with winner Tom Cirulis earning a seat in this weekend’s Hippodrome Spring Classic, worth £250.

“British poker is stronger than ever, and the talent in attendance this week is testament to that,” said Bluff Europe editor-in-chief Michael Caselli.

PokerStars.com to sponsor British Poker Awards

4 October 2013 (London, UK) - As poker fans begin to vote in their droves for their favourite players of 2013 at www.thebritishpokerawards.com, organisers Bluff Europe have announced that this year’s event will be sponsored by PokerStars.com, the world’s biggest online poker room.

Bluff Europe and PokerStars are currently working on a date and venue for the fourth annual British Poker Awards, which is expected to be a glittering evening packed with some of the biggest names in poker.

Despite corporate backing, the awards will retain the impartiality and democratic voting system of previous years, say the organisers.

Nominees are chosen by a committee comprised of an independent group of poker journalists, including Jesse May and representatives from PokerNews.com and PokerStrategy.com, as well as Bluff Europe, and then put to online public vote. PokerNews.com and PokerStrategy.com are official BPA media partners.

“PokerStars are committed to promoting poker when and wherever possible and that’s why I think this was a perfect fit for them,” said Bluff Europe’s Michael Caselli.

“Sponsorship means that we can produce an event that’s bigger and better than ever, while retaining the impartiality of the British Poker Awards. That was very important to PokerStars when they came on board and it’s very important to us too.”

Badbeat Sponsored Players Rank in the PokerStars UKIPT Nottingham 2011

Mark Maunsell, 24, was one of two Badbeat.com sponsored poker players to cash in the PokerStars UKIPT Nottingham 2011 which had a record breaking 1,058 entrants and an astounding £529,000 prize pool.
The other Badbeat.com player was Badbeat Managing Director John Conroy, who was eliminated after racing with TT against AK when down to just 15 big blinds, came in 81st and a prize of £1,375.

Mark first joined Badbeat.com as a Sponsored Player in April 2010 starting on a $300 Daily Limit and, with the support and tuition of his personal high-stakes mentor Manuel Palanca, worked his way through the levels to a $3,000 Daily Limit earning himself not only a profitable year with Badbeat.com but was awarded a PokerStars UKIPT ticket for his outstanding performance.

Mark’s mentor, Manuel, commented, “Mark played a fantastic game throughout his two days at the UKIPT Nottingham which sadly came to an end when his QQ ran into AK with the river bringing a King to eliminate Mark and put him in 70th place for a £1,585 prize. I’m still very proud of him for making it this far in such a big tournament.”

Mark Maunsell commented on his game, “This was my biggest live tournament and although it was a little nerve-wracking, my whole game was pretty solid. I just played the two cards in front of me and took it one step at a time.

Mark will be representing Badbeat.com again at the PokerStars UKIPT Manchester in March and you can keep track of him and all the Badbeat players who are entering by following them on Twitter (@BadbeatLimited), Facebook, the Badbeat Blog (blog.badbeat.com) or at www.badbeat.com.

Special Valentine’s Week Prizes will be given away to sponsored poker players from February 14-21st by hitting a Heart Flush or Straight Flush and Champagne to players who hold King and Queen of Hearts at Showdown. Visit www.badbeat.com for further details.
